Grass Fire Risk: Elevated to Critical

Grass Fire and Range Fire conditions across Kansas vary from very high in the northeast to Near-Critical in the southwest. Burning is discouraged.

I’ve attached the Situation Reports produced by each NWS office that covers Kansas. Fire concerns are relevant until the late-weekend system wets down the range. However, humidity will be on the increase starting Saturday afternoon, and as it does fire risks will decrease somewhat.

NWS Wichita — Worst Range Fire Conditions in Central KS Saturday

NWS Topeka — Very High Fire Risk Today and Saturday

Friday/Saturday Event Update

The SPC Outlook for Friday through Tuesday is succinct: “An active stretch for severe weather will occur during the entire D4-8 period, mainly over the central and southern Plains.”

This is not looking good..

We’ve been hearing about worsening fire conditions for some time now. This is the time of year we’re used to fire risks ramping up, which the dead grass is standing and spring rains have not arrived. The extensive drought and an approaching system make the next three days very risky for wildfires.
